This week, the meetings of the European Federation of Investors and Financial Services Users (BETTER FINANCE) and the European Federation of Investors (WFI) were held in Brussels. On Tuesday, BETTER FINANCE organized a conference regarding the new EU Strategy for retail investors; the guests were addressed by Mairead McGuinness, the European Commissioner for financial services, financial stability and the Capital Markets Union. Also attending the conference was the VZMD President, Mr. Kristjan Verbič, who spoke with the Commissioner and highlighted some of the current efforts of the Association, including those regarding the protection of interests of individual investors, financial services users and consumers, as well as his remarks regarding the regulation of the so-called virtual general meetings. The conference was followed by the General Meeting of BETTER FINANCE, while the meeting of the Legal Committee and the Executive Board of this influential European organization, which is made up of almost 5 million individual investors and 40 national associations of shareholders and investors, had been held on Monday.

 

As a member of the executive boards of both BETTER FINANCE and WFI, Mr. Verbič, also traveled to Europe for a week, suspending his Asian tour of the international business-investor programs Invest to Slovenia – investo.si and International investors' network – investo.international, which had already taken him to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Singapore; at the end of the month, he plans to visit Seoul as a member of the Slovenian economic delegation. At the Monday's meeting of the Legal Committee of BETTER FINANCE, Mr. Verbič presented the current legislative efforts of the VZMD regarding the virtual general meetings (VIDEO: https://youtu.be/7hVFHFYMepw), and attended the meeting of the Executive Board, as well as the informal dinner that followed. Furthermore, while in Brussels, Mr. Verbič also participated in the discussions on the efforts of the VZMD regarding the protection of the consumers and telecommunications services users, for which the VZMD had, and the beginning of the year, already initiated a class action against four telecommunication operators in Slovenia (VIDEO: https://youtu.be/itxmtIdHpK8).  

Having fulfilled his obligations in Brussels, Mr. Verbič traveled to Helsinki, where he is – as a member of the Expert Advisory Group of the Financial Services User Group at the EUROPEAN COMMISSION (FSUG) – attending an important two-day meeting of the Group.
