Today marks the beginning of the two-day session of the Expert Advisory Group of the Financial Services Users Group at the European Commission (FSUG), taking place in Vilnius, Lithuania. Among the active participants is the President of VZMD, Mr. Kristjan Verbič. This is the final FSUG meeting before the current European Commission's term ends, with the session's conclusions to be utilized in the Commission's final proposals.
The meeting features numerous external guests, who, along with FSUG members, will discuss the perspectives of civil society, academia, and regulators on shaping a financial sector that serves the European community. Among the participants discussing at the moment are Deputy Governor of the Bank of Lithuania, Julita Varanauskienė, Member of the Supervisory Board of Revolut Bank, Vytautas Valvonis, President of the Lithuanian Banking Association, Eivilė Čipkutė, President of the Lithuanian Association of Financial and Credit Management, Marius Jansonas, and many other experts.
During the current European Commission's term, VZMD has actively contributed to FSUG by providing opinions on the EU Strategy for Retail Investors, the Digital Euro, consumer legislation, legislative proposals in financial services, and more. Additionally, Mr. Verbič has often presented notable VZMD activities, such as efforts related to the expropriated shareholders and bondholders of Slovenian banks, collective lawsuits against telecommunications operators, and various other current proceedings and proposals to protect stakeholders in the Republic of Slovenia. FSUG has also addressed key decision-makers at the EU level with questions stemming from VZMD's efforts – most recently in April of this year, when the European Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability, and Capital Markets Union, Mairead McGuinness, attended the meeting.
For Mr. Verbič this is already a second visit to Lithuania this month, since he actively participated in the meeting of the European Federation of Investors and Financial Services Users (BETTER FINANCE) two weeks ago. This meeting included General Assembly and Executive Committee sessions, along with a prominent international conference titled "Shaping the Future of Finance". The conference addressed many of the current issues also tackled by FSUG, and Mr. Verbič took the opportunity to engage with numerous distinguished participants, including Lithuania's Minister of Finance, Gintarė Skaistė, Governor of the Bank of Lithuania, Gediminas Šimkus, Rector of Vilnius University, Prof. Dr. Rimvydas Petrauskas, President of European Market Services at NASDAQ, Roland Chai, and CEO of Revolut Securities Europe, Rolandas Juteika, among others.
